When you stop using a social networking profile or website, it is a good idea to deactivate or delete your account. This will mean that your content is no longer visible online and should not be searchable online. It will also remove the risk of these accounts being used by others or hacked without you knowing.
On Twitter, you deactivate your account and it deletes permanently after 30 days. During this time your account is deactivated. Deactivation is not available on mobile devices and must be done by accessing twitter.com on the web.
You are only able to permanently delete your account on Snapchat. It takes 30 days for the deletion to take place, in which time your account will be deactivated.
During these 30 days, your friends will not be able to contact or interact with you on Snapchat. After 30 days, your account will be permanently deleted, including your friends, Snaps, Chats and Stories. Your username will no longer be available.
If you change your mind in the 30 days after deleting your account you can log back into Snapchat like you normally would using your username and password. This will reactivate your account and stop your account being deleted.

Scroll through your new timeline and edit or remove any items that you may not want to show up in your timeline. To do this, hold your cursor over the upper right corner of the item that you want to edit. A pencil icon and a pop up will appear that reads Edit or Remove. Choose whichever one works for you.

Since I moved to the timeline, I have been having a hard time with the Pages of others that I have "liked"- #1 I am not seeing comments from pages that I have liked in my newsfeed and #2 I can only find the list of the pages that I have liked when using my iPhone. Activity Log is a new tool that comes with Timeline and will enable you to modify aspects of what shows up in your timeline. From there you can hide or delete posts or you can promote posts to featured status.
However, there is another option. Rather than deleting Facebook, you can just deactivate your account. But what happens when you deactivate your Facebook account? If you deactivate Facebook, can you still use Messenger? And what does deleting Facebook mean in contrast to deactivating it?
Deleting Facebook is more permanent. It's a decision that you shouldn't take lightly. If you delete your account, you can't come back and expect any of your data to still be intact. There is a way to start again, but we'll return to that later on.
Otherwise, it takes 90 days for Facebook to remove information on a deleted account from its servers. Some details will still exist, but any personal identifiers will disappear. You'll become a statistic.
How do you make sure your deactivated Facebook profile disappears? Try a simple search, either through a friend's profile or using Google. The former is a better option; otherwise, it could take a lot of time scouring results featuring others with the same name as you. This should tell you if others can still find you, even after deactivating your account.
If deactivation has worked, your posts on your own timeline won't be publicly visible, and your friends shouldn't be able to see them either. Your whole profile will have gone. But that doesn't mean comments you've made to others will disappear as well.
What happens if you delete Facebook permanently? Facebook will erase your data within three months, but there are no guarantees that it will clear every last bit of flotsam and jetsam, i.e. comments, reactions, and posts on others' timelines.
What does a deactivated Facebook account look like? You won't be able to check their profile because links revert to plain text. Posts they've made on your timeline will still exist but you will not be able to click on their name.
Look through your list of friends. If they're still listed, they're probably just preoccupied. If they're not, the second possibility is that they've blocked you. But before you investigate that, question whether they've deleted their account completely.
Check on Messenger; there could be a technical issue. You can't send a message to someone who has blocked you, and their profile picture will be replaced on any comments they've previously posted on your timeline.
When you deactivate your account, Facebook will ask if you want to deactivate Messenger too. Say no, and the app will retain your information. If you'd prefer to go without the instant messaging service, you can deactivate Messenger separately.
Yes, you can still use Messenger, so it follows that your messages will appear after deactivating your account. In fact, when you press "Send," as long as you have internet access, the message will go straight to the recipient's inbox.
If you've deactivated your Facebook account, all you need to do is log back in. You can change your password if you've forgotten it. Your profile still exists, as does your personal information. Previous messages and comments typically re-appear too.
The social network lets you download a copy of all the data Facebook has stored about you. That means you can get your account back up and running, although the process is a bit trickier than if you've merely deactivated it.
Much the same happens after deletion; tags will revert to plain text. If you open a new account, those original tags won't link automatically with your name again. Just think of the number of people with the same name as you.
Legacy contacts are named by the account holder prior to their death -- a family member or a friend who will be able to manage the person's memorialized account when they die. Legacy contacts can post a pinned post at the top of the deceased user's Timeline, respond to new friend requests, and update the person's profile picture and cover photo. They can also, with the deceased user's permission, download an archive of the user's photos, Timeline posts, and profile information.
To choose a legacy contact, open up your Facebook account and go to Settings > Security > Legacy Contact. Click Edit, type in your friend's name, and click Add.
You will have the choice to send them a message about your choice immediately -- click Send to send them the message, or click Not Now if you'd prefer they not know about your decision. You'll need to eventually tell them, of course, because they will need to ask Facebook to memorialize your account when you die.
